CoFutures: Science Fiction, Diversity, and the Case for Speculation

What kind of futures are we imagining, and what happens when multiple visions of the future are in conflict with each other? Using science fictional futures as a launchpad, Bodhisattva Chattopadhyay makes a case for how we may use speculation to work towards the possibilities of “our common future” (Brundtland Report, 1987) at a time when futures appear increasingly fragmented (neither common, nor ours), or closed (due to apocalypses of different shades including climate change).

Bodhisattva Chattopadhyay studies Science Fiction at the University of Oslo and is the Principal Investigator of the newly funded ERC project “CoFutures: Pathways to Possible Presents.” He is also the founding co-editor of Routledge Studies in Global Genre Fiction.
